There are a couple of ways to learn how to dance and before you start, it's important to learn about them.

The most obvious way to learn to dance, of course, is to go to a class.

This method of learning has both advantages and disadvantages that should be carefully examined.

There are some big advantages to going to a class. You will get direct feedback from an instructor as you are dancing so you can correct any mistakes you are making.

There is also the social aspect of going to a dance class - you can meet new people who have similar interests.

Of course, there are disadvantages to attending a dance class as well. Going to a dance class is the most expensive way to learn how to dance, and not everyone can afford to take a class.

It can also be difficult to find the time to attend a dance class. A busy work schedule can get in the way, as can a busy home life and social life. If you have children this can be especially difficult as it means finding someone to watch your kids while you go out.

Learning to dance in the comfort of your own home has an advantage over taking a class due to the fact that when you're at home by yourself or with your partner you are more relaxed because you're not worried about looking awkward or clumsy in front of strangers.

Being relaxed will help you master the steps far more quickly.

If you have a spouse, learning to dance from a video can be a fun and romantic way to connect with each other. Light some candles and spend some time just focusing on each other and on learning a new skill.

This is a huge advantage for parents because it can be done after the kids go to bed.

There are, of course, a couple of disadvantages to using a video.

You will miss out on the feedback you would get from a teacher.

One way to overcome this is to have your spouse or a friend watch you while you practice and compare you to the video so they can give you feedback.

You can also use a mirror to watch yourself while you learn.

Another disadvantage is the fact that you are missing out on the social aspect of dance.

1. Dancers work under too much pressure and are overworked. Injuries can be prevented by allowing sufficient rest in your schedule to prevent fatigue. Appreciate rest and relaxation.

4. Most dancers do not breathe properly. Dancers ar not generally known for their aerobic fitness. With insufficient oxygen in the lungs, lactic acid can accumulate causing fatigue or aching and cramping muscles. Good breathing techniques can aid in the proper execution of dance movements. It can add dynamics and a pleasing quality to the upper body. Remember even though you are a dancer, you are a person and people breathe. Breathing can also add the emotional context you are looking for. Breathe!

5. As a dancer you need to learn how to learn. You learn by following a series of steps. First you repeat movement taught in class. You repeat them technically correct. You then learn how to do the movements with a minimal amount of muscular contraction and tension to reproduce the movement required. You need to make the movement look easy. By eliminating excessive tension the movement becomes ingrained in the muscle memory. Rehearsals can be much more intense than actual performances. This is due to the constant repetition to do something better or to fix a movement that is not correct.

You need to be a quick study, not only to keep up in class and with other dancers but to avoid overuse injuries that a very common in professional dancers. Dancers must learn their own natural learning style and make use of all their senses. Visualization can also be a very useful skill. Strengthening exercises are very important before performances.

Take Your Dancing To New Heights Through Better Breathing

When learning to dance, first we concentrate on learning patterns, hearing the beat and maintaining communication with our partner. However, after we become familiar with the patterns we want to dance, are able to dance on beat, and are comfortable leading and/or following your partner, the next steps to mastership are actually less mechanical in nature.

Advanced concepts in dancing has more to do with attunement and flow of energy. We need to get our body in a receptive mode and the way to do that is through proper breathing.

The importance of proper breathing is prevalent in any skill we want to develop, whether playing the piano, martial arts or dancing. It helps you to relax and perform at a higher level.

Developing good breathing habits will not only improve your dance skills, but it will give you more stamina and control in any activity you choose.

The first thing we can do to improve our breathing is to become more aware of it. Start concentrating on the depth and rhythm of your breathing without trying to change it. Then, slowly increase the range of your inhalation and exhalation.

Also, proper posture improves our breathing naturally. Keep your shoulders back and your head straight allowing the chest to open up and your rip cage to expand and contract freely.

Here are three simple exercises to help you increase the range of your breathing.

SITING EXERCISE

Seat on a chair with your spine straight

  • Put one hand on your abdomen and another one on your chest
  • Start inhaling slowly and feel your abdomen fill and expand then fill and expand the chest

Do not over strain the breathing, allow it to grow naturally.

WALKING EXERCISE

When going for a walk you can use each step as a count.

  • Inhale during a count of four steps
  • Hold during a count of eight
  • Exhale during a count of twelve

Maintaining the same ratio, you can increase or reduce your breathing range to suit your comfort zone. You can reduce the numbers to 2, 4, 8 or you could increase them to 6, 12, 18.

LYING ON BED EXCERCISE

Lay on your back and do some belly breathing. Let the air go directly to your abdomen area and expand it during inhalation and contract it during exhalation

  • Inhale during a count of four
  • Hold for two
  • Exhale during a count of four
  • Hold for two

When going to bed this exercise will help you relax and fall seep quickly.

Styles of Dance Classes

Ballet is viewed as the basis of all forms of dance. This is because of it's rigid structure of movement. The core of ballet is comprised of erect posture, turnout of the legs, five basic positions of the dancer's feet, pointe work, lifting of the leg known as extension, and different levels, such as jumps, releves, and plies. Ballet takes years of training. Classical dance such as ballet has been known by qualities such as graceful and elegance. Ballet, not unlike Opera, often is used to deliver a story with drama. Mime is found in ballet technique, were it is designed to speak without words. A ballet is commonly used to tell famous stories. The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty are prime examples. Professional dancers work on the technique of classical ballet for many years in order to have a chance at performing it for a living.

These techniques are made up of movement that is free of rigid form and one that constantly changes to adjust to different types of feelings. The movement is based upon using organic use of gravity, momentum and breath to create steps that move through space. The biggest difference between ballet and contemporary dance is in the use of gravity. Ballet stays away from it and Modern dance is ruled by it. The natural swing of the body falling and rising generates the movement.

Modern is know as an abstract style of dance but is quickly becoming a part of the worldwide art culture. It tends to be very dramatic, touching on human emotion which commonly does not follow the storyboard like ballet. Modern dance can be experimental, not always having themes or a story, making it seem open ended. Modern uses other inspirations, which other styles also do, but modern is more known for being inspired by a feeling or a life event. It often takes everyday situations or stories and makes a dance of feeling. A basic example would be to look at a rainbow and make a movement structure reflecting the pattern of the rainbow's arch and using its various colors to depict different movement qualities. An example of modern dance can be seen performed by Alvin Ailey or Netherlands Danse Theatre. Contemporary and Modern dance transforms movement into a tool that can speak to an audience on a more abstract level.

Jazz, probably the most commercially known form of dancing, is usually a fast paced and energetic dance form. Jazz dance can take on many different styles. The classic form, think Chorus Line, is comprised of sharp lines and precise movements. Jazz is also known for turns and jumps that have explosive power behind them. It is most often seen on television shows like "So you Think You Can Dance" and "Glee" were it takes on its more common counterpart, Musical Theater.

These three forms of dance are all linked to one another through its basic similarities found through ballet. Just how a painting encompasses different historical periods, uses of different colors and brush strokes, dance does through movement quality, musicality, and body structure.

Willpower and Partner Dance - The Simple Key to Better Lessons and Learning Faster

Do you ever find your mind wondering in your dance class? You know you should pay attention, and after you notice that you're not focused you put the effort into concentrating. However, it's not long until all of a sudden you notice that your mind is wondering again. And then not long after that, you notice that you've actually missed something important, and you're just not getting as much out of the class as you could or should be. Chances are that you have noticed this with things other than dance, but dance actually lends itself to this phenomenon more than many other activities. Fortunately, once you understand why this is the case, it is incredibly easy to deal with. In this article I am going to explain why you are more likely to lose concentration in a dance class and what can be done about it.

Willpower

Often, concentration in class comes down to willpower. You obviously enjoy dancing and you like seeing yourself improve. However, at times, when the instructor is explaining something you can feel like Charlie Brown talking to his teacher. You can hear that there is noise coming from their mouth, but it's just noise to you. This is normal. Whenever we need to be still and not active while another talks, our minds naturally wonder. It takes effort to keep this attention, and that means will power.

'So work on your will power' some will say. It's not that easy. An article in the January 2012 edition of New Scientist covered what was currently known about will power. The most interesting thing about it, I thought, is that will power actually uses energy. If you blood sugar levels are low, then we find it hard to maintain our will. This explains why some diets never work. You have little energy from not eating enough food, and this up quickly trying to maintain you will power to not give into the temptation of eating the food you love. Combine this with a diet and exercise regime, and you can see how failure is imminent. This is a slight digression, but it shows that will power (and concentration) very much needs energy.

Willpower and dance

Given that dance can be active it will burn some energy - energy that could be used to aide concentration. Think about when you have your dance lesson. It's probably later in the day. It is likely after work when you have already used up a lot of your energy reserves. So in a sense it is almost like your dance classes have been set up to make it hard for you to maintain the will to keep concentrating on the lesson. When you consider that it is just that, a lesson, then you realise that you might have an issue.

To improve your dance ability you are going to have to concentrate. You have probably already read about how dance is so good for us because it works both the body and the mind. As you now know, this is really going to use up your energy, and rob you of your ability to concentrate.

Maintaining your willpower

So you now know that you need to keep you willpower going if you're going to have effective dance lessons. You also know that the key to will power is energy. So the solution is obvious. You need an energy burst at the start of each lesson. I personally buy a hand full of Chupa Chups every now and then and have one before a lesson. Obviously, any lollipop will do - you just need something that will slowly release the sugar into your system during the class. If you want to be popular with other students or your teacher, then bring enough to share.

Why Does Partner Dancing Feel Odd?

Have you ever thought that the way you're asked to move when learning partner feels odd? If you have then you're not alone. Many of us learning dance feel this way. At first, this might not seem like such a big deal. However, when we feel odd doing something, we are unlikely to keep doing it. This means that while we might dance well at first, we will soon regress to way of dancing that feel better, but aren't correct. Ideally, we want the correct way of dancing to feel like the natural way. In this article I will explain why partner dance can feel odd and what can be done to so that this will not adversely affect your dance ability.

A major part of the issue is body language. Many dance moves correspond to bold moves. Or perhaps other strong emotions. If you're not feeling those emotions, then there will be incongruence between what you're doing and feeling. This will definitely make you feel odd.

The other major part of the issue is that we're simply not used to the types of movement that are common to partner dance. This is a lot like when you first put on a pair of shoes and you notice that one is tighter than the other. It's also like when you wear a new watch or stop wearing a watch that you've been wearing for a long time. Another example that is perhaps more pertinent is that of people who still limp after having a hip replacement. The hip doesn't hurt, but they still limp. This isn't as common as it used to be because of better medical care, which in itself shows how hard it can be to change the way we move.

The solution to this issue is basically being aware of the issue. Once we know that feeling odd is OK, and not an indication that we are moving incorrectly, that feeling is less likely to affect the way we dance. Still, to be better partner dancers, we would rather it all feel natural.

The first step is to trust the teacher. When the teacher tells you that you're doing something right, then accept that it is right, no matter how it feels. The same goes for when they say it's not right and it still feels natural. You need to accept that your feel is not as good an indication of good couples dancing as is your teacher's observations.

The second step is to try to take on the emotions of the dance. It's always worth finding out what 'role' you're meant to play in a dance. Are you meant to be bold, submissive, aggressive or desired for example? If you try to take on this emotion, as opposed to whatever you happen to be feeling at the time, then your body language will fit with the dance moves.

The above two steps will do a lot to help. However, it sometimes helps to correlate the physical feeling with the looks. This is why dance studios often have mirrors. Put the effort into looking at yourself in the mirror when dancing or get a video of yourself when couples dancing. It will likely amaze you how different you look from how you thought you would look given how your body felt.

When you start partner dancing you might find that one of you major issues is timing. This is obviously essential. The music used for partner dance is different, especially salsa music, which has a pattern that goes over two bars, and waltz, which has three beats to the bar instead of the more common 4.

Immersion method

The immersion method assumes that you have been listening to music, and have the basics within you, and all you need to do is focus on the applicable aspects of the right type of music. It does also assume that you know the basics of what makes up a bar so if you're familiar with the basic of music (beats, bars and such), then read about them first.

Once you know the basics, select music that you will be dancing to (try to get a good number of songs in the style that interest you). Also make sure that it is music that you know something about.
